In France, the ecological bonus came into being at the beginning of 2008. Its objective is to encourage consumers to invest in less polluting vehicles through a bonus. The objective was also to encourage manufacturers to develop more ecological models and allow an accelerated renewal of the vehicle fleet. Since then, this ecological bonus has evolved on numerous occasions, whether in terms of its amount, the conditions for obtaining it or the vehicles in question. It must be said that in recent years, things are changing very quickly in terms of environmental protection. The ecological bonus therefore naturally adapts to new trends. In terms of automobiles, the future is more than ever linked to electric vehicles.
A trend largely confirmed during the car show which opened in October 2022 with a special emphasis on electric cars. It was also on this occasion that the President of the Republic, Emmanuel Macron, announced that the ecological bonus could, from the year 2023, increase from 6,000 to 7,000 euros for so-called modest households. The attribution terms are not yet known, but this announcement demonstrates the government’s willingness to encourage the purchase of electric vehicles.
How does the ecological bonus work?
Before knowing exactly what new directions will be brought to the ecological bonus in 2023, it is important to take stock of the existing system. This ecological bonus is accessible to adults residing in France, but also to legal persons with a company domiciled in the national territory, namely car rental companies. It is intended for buyers of a less polluting vehicle as well as rental professionals.
To benefit from the ecological bonus as part of a purchase, the vehicle in question must not be resold before six months (this period will increase to one year in 2023) and must have driven at least 6,000 km. Must be registered in France and be electric or plug-in hybrid type. As part of a rental, it must be rented for a minimum of two years. Please note that the eco bonus can also be awarded on the purchase of a used vehicle. In this case, it must not be resold for two years and must be an electric vehicle, not being rechargeable hybrids.
The value of the ecological bonus
As indicated above, the ecological bonus is frequently reviewed, so its amount may vary from year to year, as may the award criteria. Until the end of 2022, its maximum value is 6,000 euros and concerns the purchase of an electric vehicle for a value of less than 47,000 euros. For a car that costs between 47,000 and 60,000 euros, its value is limited to 2,000 euros, while for vehicles over 60,000 euros powered by hydrogen. For a van, the ecological bonus reaches the threshold of 7,000 euros. On the other hand, for a used electric vehicle or a plug-in hybrid, it does not exceed 1,000 euros. Finally, it should be noted that in the overseas departments an additional bonus of 1,000 euros is granted, with the exception of used cars. In 2023, the value of the maximum ecological bonus is expected to increase from 6,000 to 5,000 euros, with the exception of half of the most modest households who will be able to claim 7,000 euros of aid, but the terms of this new version are not yet available. clearly defined.
The ecological bonus compatible with other aids
Currently, the daily use ofan electric vehicle is cheaper than gasoline or diesel powered equipment. However, its acquisition represents an additional cost not to be missed, even if prices are expected to fall in the coming years. The purpose of the ecological bonus is to encourage consumers to equip themselves with this type of vehicle, despite this additional initial cost. An objective that is all the more achievable as the ecological bonus can be combined with other aids, starting with the conversion bonus. To benefit from this, you must scrap a vehicle registered before 2006 (2011 for diesel) and buy a plug-in hybrid or electric vehicle. Depending on the energy performance of the model purchased and the family income, the conversion premium can reach a value of up to 5,000 euros. Regional bonuses also exist. In the Greater Paris region, they can reach 6,000 euros. Finally, in 2023, a zero interest loan will be implemented in the so-called low mobility and issuance zones and will be accessible to micro-enterprises and low-income families. Suffice it to say that it is important to get good information from professionals in the industry to know what aids are available for purchasing an electric car.
