The exterior design of Zion is basicper fit as many solar panels as possible.

Solar energy as an important source of energy for an electric car is difficult to implement in the automobile and the technology is expensive. Furthermore, it is not a reliable source of energy: without the sun, there is no electricity.

The first Sion prototype with a solar envelope was unveiled in the summer of 2017. Compared to the first concepts, the Sion has benefited from major improvements, both exterior and interior.

After a ramp-up period, the two partners aim to produce around 257,000 Sion “solar electric vehicle (SEV)” within seven years. the Sono brand plans to produce around 43,000 cars a year once the Sion is launched.

However, it remains to be seen how Sono Motors will be able to make the solar-powered car viable, as many questions still arise: Will solar panels be as efficient as expected? How will technology age? Can an insurer claim significant additional cost due to body-integrated solar panels? In the event of a major shock, where can Sion be repaired? In the event of an impact, will it be possible to find spare parts? In the event of a crash, will the solar panels be repairable?

Nothing is therefore decided yet, the there are still many questions and theeuropean approval continues to be obtained for Sono Motors’ “affordable” solar electric vehicle (SEV).
