L’arlésienne is finally becoming a reality. Considered for several years by the automotive press, the Peugeot 408 was officially presented by the French manufacturer on Wednesday, June 22, 2022. And as expected, this new Peugeot 408 is an elevated sedan with a fastback-style silhouette. It is therefore the first Peugeot model to sport an SUV coupe look.

At 4.69 meters long, 1.859 meters wide and 1.48 meters high, the new Peugeot 408 is clearly positioned between the 308 and 508. The car is based on a new version of the EMP2 modular platform, which allows you to benefit from a long wheelbase of 2,787 meters. This new 408 is perched on 20-inch rims with a particularly atypical design.

In terms of design, the 408 is a continuation of what Peugeot offers in the new 308. The 10-inch i-Cockpit digital instrument cluster sits behind a heated steering wheel and can be equipped with an optional 3D display.

In the center of the dashboard, a 10-inch touchscreen is located just below the i-Cockpit. It is associated with touch shortcuts to access essential functions faster. Under these controls, the traditional piano keys are dedicated to air conditioning.

Finally, a large central tunnel separates the two front seats, including storage space as well as the automatic gearbox selector and driving mode selector.

Thanks to the car’s long wheelbase and seat design, Peugeot claims to have maximized the space reserved for passengers installed in the rear.

The upholstery consists of evolutionary mottled fabric, Alcantara, technical mesh, embossed leather and colored Nappa leather. The occupants of the cabin can enjoy two USB-C sockets, two cup holders or even storage whose total volume reaches 34 litres.

Under the hood, Peugeot favors the rechargeable hybrid.

The new 408 is offered primarily with two engines of this type. The first is called Hybrid 180 e-EAT8. It includes a 150 hp PureTech petrol unit associated with a 110 hp electric motor, for a total accumulated power of 180 hp, as its name suggests. It is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Titled Hybrid 225 e-EAT8, the second plug-in hybrid engine in the new Peugeot 408 features a 180hp PureTech petrol unit and a 110hp electric motor, for a combined total output of 225hp.

Peugeot still does not disclose the electric range of these two rechargeable hybrid engines. According to the manufacturer, this would be being verified by the WLTP certification cycle. We know that both versions are equipped with a 12.4 kWh battery that can be recharged with a maximum power of 102 kW. Specifically, with a Wall Box and the 7.4 kW single-phase on-board charger, a full charge can be carried out in 1h55 according to Peugeot. With a standard outlet, a full charge takes 7:05.

Peugeot also markets the new 408 with a single internal combustion engine. It is a three-cylinder 1.2 PureTech 130 hp petrol engine. This is mated to an eight-speed EAT8 automatic transmission. No manual gearbox appears to be offered on the new 408. Nor does the Stellantis group member manufacturer offer an electric version of the 408 at launch time.

Peugeot doesn’t skimp on the driving aids available on board this new 408. The car, halfway between a sedan and an SUV, has adaptive cruise control with Stop & Go function, active alert when crossing a line, automatic collision hazard alert, driver attention alert, night vision, extended recognition and digital instrument panel display of traffic signs or even rear traffic.

The Peugeot 408 is also provided with a reversing camera, long-range blind-spot monitoring, 360-degree parking assistance and automatic high beam switching. As an option, the manufacturer offers the Drive Assist 2.0 package, which adds autonomous driving functions to the Peugeot 408, such as semi-automatic lane change and advance speed recommendation.
