Unsurprisingly, the French automotive market recorded declining numbers in May 2022 for the 12th consecutive month. A troubling observation for which no manufacturer can find a solution. Despite this, new car sales continue in France.
On the other hand, the electric vehicle sector is constantly growing and not weakening. More than 15,000 100% electric vehicles found buyers in May. Which model will have aroused the most interest among individuals? The answer in this article.
The Peugeot 208 still leads passenger car sales
The best-selling passenger car of the entire year 2021 with just over 88,000 copies sold, ahead of its main competitor the Renault Clio V and its 85,247 units, the Peugeot 208 has always maintained its leadership in sales since the beginning of the year. .
In the first 5 months of 2022, the city with the lion has a 5.8% market share with a total of 34,992 sales (from which we can take the 6,851 electric models sold, i.e. a total of 28,141 Peugeot 208 thermals sold) , ie 1.7 points more than the third generation Citroën C3 and the Renault Clio V. The diamond model is in third place in this ranking with 24,356 units sold.
At the foot of the podium, of course, we find the Dacia Sandero, not far behind the C3 and Clio, as the Romanian model has sold 22,296 copies since the beginning of the year.
Stellantis and Grupo Renault leave no room for competition in the French market, as the top 10 places in this ranking of new private vehicle sales since the beginning of this year are occupied by models from the brands of both groups.
Thus, the Peugeot 2008, 308 and 3008 are respectively in 5th, 7th and 8th place, surrounded by the Renault Captur, the SUV Coupé Arkana and the second generation of the Duster.

Tesla and Zoé ejected from the podium, electric model of the best-selling Fiat 500 in May
Small surprise on the side of the electric vehicle ranking last May, without Tesla Model 3 or Renault Zoé on the podium. Even more, no Tesla model is among this top 10 where the Fiat 500 is in the lead, to note the entry in this ranking of the New Renault Mégane E-Tech, in 6th place, behind the Dacia Spring.
With 2,129 copies sold, the Fiat 500e is in the lead, ahead of the Peugeot e-208 and the Renault Twingo E-Tech. In 4th place is the Renault Zoé, which recorded a drop of almost 19% in sales since the beginning of the year. Maybe a Megane E-Tech effect? Anyway, the new diamond crossover is in 6th with 758 units sold in May 2022.
At Tesla, the sharp rise in model prices will have an immediate impact. The Model 3 registered an increase of almost 7,000 euros in France, which logically lowered its sales figures.
In the rest of the ranking, the regulars are present with the Mini Cooper SE, the Hyundai Kona Electric or the Peugeot e-2008. The Citroën e-C4 closes this ranking.

Dacia Spring remains at the top of electric sales since the beginning of the year
Throughout the year as a whole, it is the Dacia Spring that maintains the lead in electric vehicle sales in France with just over 7,800 units, ahead of the Fiat 500e and Peugeot e-208. The Tesla Model 3 is in this ranking and ahead of the Renault Zoé. In these first 5 months, 71,444 electric models were registered in France.
Dacia still at the top among individuals in Q1 2022
As with last year, despite a declining second-hand market, the Sandero remains, at the moment, the best-selling private car, with 12,239 sales in the first quarter. If it regresses 32.5% in relation to the same period last year, the novelty effect is probably there for something. However, it is far ahead of its cousin Clio and Peugeot 208, which are also falling in private sales.
In addition to the podium, we find the diamond mini-SUV, the Captur, as well as the Romanian SUV Duster. The Tesla Model 3, Ford Puma, Peugeot 2008, Citroën C3 and Dacia Spring follow in 10th position, which, in addition to being the best-selling new electric vehicle, already attracts many customers in the used market.
A second-hand market still very tight due to increased demand and falling supply, even in specialist companies such as bymycar. Click here to see the used range.
