Cupra announces 3 electric and hybrid models!

A few hours after spending the night alongside Terramar, the unusual abandoned track from where it all began for Cupra in 2018, one thing is clear: “ambition” has become the buzzword in Catalonia. In fact, four years after pregnancy, on the occasion of the Primavera festival, Cupra mixes trendy music, neon-based shows and an eccentric and futuristic atmosphere to present not two, but three concepts. The first one, you already know it, as it’s the Urban Rebel, but the Cupra has made great strides since the little electric’s inception. The interior is already known, as it is part of the technical sheet! Three years after launch, all the same… Also come the already successful Tavascan, and the Terramar, a novelty that should replace the Cupra Ateca with hybrid engines.

Cupra Terramar, the big news

It was, therefore, the real surprise of the night: the formalization of this famous SUV that had been announced recently during the great investment plan of 10 billion euros in Spain. The Terramar (land and sea in Spanish) is an average SUV measuring 4.50 meters in length that will logically replace the Ateca, even if the Cupra has hammered well: the Terramar is not the replacement for the Ateca. ‘Ateca. That is. But the two are in the same spirit, with one detail: Terramar will be both thermal, hybrid and rechargeable hybrid with an announced range of 100 km in electric mode. This then implies a battery of generous capacity and a substantial weight, but Cupra says nothing for now about the underside of this Terramar that will be launched in 2024 and produced in Hungary, at the factory of the … future Audi Q3 .

Cupra Tavascan, the production version

The evening was an opportunity for Cupra to present the production version of the Tavascan, the manufacturer’s first electric SUV. Unfortunately, we didn’t have the opportunity to approach the beast, who, once the conference was over, was carefully repatriated behind the scenes. At first glance, an observation: the new visual signature of Cupra. The front lights in triangles will be applied to all bundles of future models of the Iberian brand, Leon and Formentor included. The Tavascan was envisioned in a very muscular design, especially at the rear with a hyper-worked shield and a large light strip. And again, the famous triangular shapes in optics. But make no mistake: the Tavascan is a cousin of the Volkswagen ID.5. The basis is therefore the MEB platform with 77 kWh and 300 hp batteries for the sporty interpretation of the wise German SUV. On the other hand, ID.5 and Tavascan do not offer the same onboard experience! The cockpit and its large panel that extends to the floating center console would almost think of an alien spaceship cockpit.. Incredible. The huge central touchscreen faces the driver and brings together all the comfort functions, including air conditioning. Too bad, therefore, for those who were expecting knobs or buttons to adjust the temperature. Where will Tavascan be produced? Cupra would not yet have ruled. If the Terramar and Urban Rebel assembly sites are known, it is not the case for the electric SUV. Though logical, I would have mounted them alongside the ID.5 in Zwickau, Germany.

Cupra Urban Rebel, the cheapest

The Cupra Urban Rebel is still a concept, but this time it's much closer to the production version, which will be released in 2025.

Everyone expects the versatile electric car for less than €25,000, excluding any deductions from our dear governments. Even though Cupra has not revealed the price of its Urban Rebel that will be marketed in 2025, we will bet on a price close to this level that is so important for many motorists. And what are we going to achieve with this budget? The Urban Rebel is a versatile B-segment electric city car. A kind of Ibiza of the future, but with very different proportions: just over 4 meters long, but above all 1.58 meters high: 14 centimeters longer than an Ibiza! Huge, and that’s what explains this funny print on the front of the Urban Rebel, which we can’t identify: is it a pure city car? An urban intersection? Looking at the proportions, hard to say.

The technical sheet, on the other hand, is less uncertain. The Urban Rebel will be the first Volkswagen group car on the front-engine MEB platform. The other electric city cars from Skoda, Volkswagen, Audi and Seat, which will be produced in Martorell along with the Urban Rebel, will be entitled to the same revenue.

In the Urban Rebel, the front engine develops 226 hp and tows the Iberian to 100 km/h in 6.9 seconds. Two versions are already in the program: a first focused on sport with about 400 km of autonomy, and another, “long autonomy”, which will advance a little further, to 440 km. The battery capacity is not yet known, but taking into account the wheelbase of 2.60 meters and what we know about the Volkswagen group, it should be around 58 kWh.
