For two years, the Chinese e-commerce giant’s logistics platform project seemed buried. The group opposing this bill recently realized that this is not the case. He wants to challenge elected officials and citizens on the issue that would destroy a remarkable wetland.
On this 30th of May, neither the mayor of Belin-Beliet nor the community of the commune wanted to answer the questions of our journalists on the spot.
The matter has been debated since May 2020, since the announcement in the local press of an implementation project of a logistics platform from the Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba andn Val de l’Eyre in Gironde.
The location was planned for the inter-municipal artisanal zone Sylva 21, located in the municipality of Belin-Beliet in the Gironde. The project provides for more than 71,000 m2 of buildings in an area of 19 hectares, including 13 ha in a wetland of high environmental value.
In June 2020, a coordination was created: ” Don’t touch my wetland, no to the logistics giants in Val de l’Eyre” (TPZH coordination). this group carries out information actions on the subject.
Thus, he explains the various twists of the case:
- they “Two promises to sell the coveted land, signed in 2018, expired on March 29, 2022, rendering the application for a construction permit submitted by the PRD developer for the location of its facilities null and void.“.
- But this on April 7th, ” during the municipal council of Belin-Beliet, the mayor of Belin-Beliet indicated that he wanted to “prolong the undersigned – awaiting responses from the State services“.
For Vincent Bracchetti, secretary of the coordination of the TPZH: “it’s a missed opportunity. The opportunity to lead this debate that never happened, neither with the citizens nor with the current majorities (Municipal Council and Community of Communes, Editor’s Note).” That’s why the members of the collective send an open letter for them to resume the debate.
they ask thecouncilors to enjoy opportunity to contest the sale of these lands to the PRD promoter”. are the heirs of a choice made by the former municipal team, you have the possibility now of putting an end to this project, preventing a new signature below“.
They add that in doing so they could nevertheless act allowing “the establishment of businesses in about 6 ha outside the wetland and maintain the hope of local, decent and sustainable jobs in its territory“keeping”13 hectares of wetlands so that it can fully play its role in regulating the droughts and floods that the Eyre Valley is a victim of, thus maintaining its role in the biodiversity and connectivity of natural environments”.
In the argument, the PRD buyer explains that this establishment would allow the creation of 300 jobs. For the collective, this argument would be illusory compared to other logistics platform establishments in France: “Do we want a job at any price? We know that today they (these platforms) employ far fewer people than they promise: fixed-term contracts, temporary workers at 50-70%, part-time, night work, etc. And will these jobs be filled by people from the territory?
In addition to the debate they demand, they especially want to defend the wetland as its name suggests. 13 hectares of the project concern a wetland with high environmental value. While the defense of these biotopes is included in the Landes de Gascogne National Park charter. They must be “identified and preserved”.
He reminds us that wetlands are important in many ways.
- they have a hydrological role: they retain water in winter and release it in spring
- fight against global warming because they are true carbon sinks
- they are rich in biodiversity with, in particular, the presence of a remarkable ecosystem to be preserved.
The controversy, therefore, is not over because the project continues. That’s why the collective calls ” all elected officials to do whatever is necessary to avoid such an extension or renewal of subscription. In general, we denounce the lack of communication on the part of the Community of communes of Val de l’Eyre about this project, and the absence of democratic debate“.
The coordination Touche Pas A Ma Zone Humide intends to be present at the next meeting of the municipal council of Belin-Beliet on June 2 (7 pm), distribute this open letter to belinetois elected officials.
