The electric car does not pollute in use, requires less maintenance, and electricity costs less than gasoline over the same distance. But she has another life-changing quality…
Do you remember the first confinement? This somewhat surreal time when, all closed in, the townspeople rediscovered (or discovered) amazed by the silence undisturbed here and there by the chirping of the birds and the applause at 8 pm for the caregivers?
Do you remember the almost oppressive calm that reigned over our cities? This calm that then made us realize what we had assumed until then without really being aware of it: the noise of our modern societies is emitted mainly by road traffic. And therefore by heat engines, whether in cars, utility vehicles or motorized two-wheelers. And also planes, on a smaller scale, since the latter is not continuous, except to live next to an airport.
engines? Not only, of course. A moving vehicle emits other noise pollution, whether from rolling, various friction or aerodynamics. But the sum of the noises emitted by the engines is certainly greater than the sum of all the others, even if recent cars are getting quieter and quieter.
More cars, more noise. It was radical.
You see me coming… No, electric cars aren’t completely silent, yes, they still emit some decibels, and when they don’t emit any, we force them to emit some with AVAS so as not to create road genocide in the pedestrian armies that have become deaf and blind recently. But electric cars are much quieter than thermal cars, at least up to a certain speed, and therefore particularly where this is an issue, namely in the city.
And yet, when we talk about electricity, silence – even if it is mentioned, even in advertisements, and sometimes in a somewhat biased way – is no longer the first argument that comes up in conversations. We talk about ecology, zero emissions, cost of use and maintenance, fine particles, weight, autonomy, but rarely noise pollution. And yet, it is probably the only argument that is unstoppable and indisputable. Anti-EVs will always be able to object, with their usual bad faith tinged with ignorance, to the fact that an electric car “pollutes more than a thermal one” or just “displaces the problem”, but they will never be able to contest the fact that an electric car is quieter. Because precisely, it is a fact. And the noise that is not emitted in our streets is not sent to mines in Africa or China.
Noise pollution, that insidious enemy
It’s an underrated subject, one we talk about very little in the end, but noise pollution is an insidious scourge that deteriorates quality of life and can even have direct health consequences. Its consequences are not limited to simple fatigue or temporary discomfort. ADEME estimates, for example, in a recent study (PDF) that each year, noise pollution generates 155.7 billion euros in social costs due to the diseases it causes or the loss of heritage value, and that in France, 25 million people are affected by the effects of noise pollution, of which 9 million are overexposed with chronic health effects. A study that also confirms that road traffic is, in fact, the main source of disturbance. I know, ADEME studies are worth what they are and are often contested, but it still gives an idea of the problem, and ADEME is not the only one to have produced reports, which, whatever the sources, generally all go in the same direction. direction.
So it is clear that the car is not the only responsible for this pollution of the eardrums, but it is not very difficult to imagine in a scenario of anticipation that a large city in which only 100% electric vehicles would circulate (cars, SUVs, public transport, 2 wheels ) to get rid of an overwhelming part of its noise, and that the calm that would reign there would certainly be very favorable to our collective mental health.
Furthermore, the silence or, in any case, the reduction of noise pollution produced by electric vehicles does not only concern city dwellers or local residents. The occupants of the vehicle also benefit from it, as it is now known that with equivalent mileage and average, a trip aboard an electric car is much less tiring than aboard a thermal one, even considered silent. The absence of vibrations due to the combustion engine plus the transmission combination certainly has something to do with it too. That’s why we recently added sound level measurement to our supertests.
Also in this, in addition to the induced behaviors, the electric car will certainly contribute to a more peaceful and less aggressive society.
