Electric car: the three most expensive vehicles on the market

Today, Tesla Magazine invites you to discover the three jewels of the moment. From the Porsche Taycan to the Tesla Model S Plaid, then to Lucid Air, let’s go to this TOP 3 whose keyword is “put your hand in your pocket”!

Porsche Taycan

Starting from the Mission E concept unveiled in 2015, the Porsche Taycan has been on the market since late 2019.

  • Available in four versions 2S, 4S, Turbo and Turbo S, it combines up to 761 hp and 463 km of autonomy.
  • The Taycan 2S access model is available from €86,254 in France, or €20,000 less than the old entry-level Taycan 4S, displayed for €108,632, excluding options.
  • The Turbo is more expensive, starting at €155,552, with the Turbo S being the top of the range with its €189,152.
  • Deliveries started in 2020, with the exception of the 2S, which joined the range at a later date.

Exterior and interior design

The Porsche Taycan’s design is inspired by the Mission E concept itself, offering similarities to the 918 Spyder, the rear evoking the 911.

Sporting a body made up of a mix of aluminum, steel and carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP), the Taycan is mounted on carbon rims: 21″ at the front and 22″ at the rear. The aluminum brakes housed in these wheels are impressive, up to a diameter of 420 mm in the Turbo S, combined with 10-piston calipers.

Capable of accommodating up to four passengers, the cabin is noticeable by the many screens, five exactly in number. With touch controls, voice control is obviously possible.

Engine and performance

Similar to those used in the 919 hybrid, two electric motors power the electric sedan. Particularly, the rear unit has a 2-speed transmission, against one at the front. The basic system develops 625 horsepower (460 kW).

An Overboost function, however, distinguishes the Turbo and Turbo S models. The first reaches 500 kW (680 hp), the second 560 kW (761 hp), the torque being respectively 850 and 1,050 Nm.

These characteristics make it possible to reach 0 to 100 km/h in 2.8 seconds in the Taycan Turbo S and exceed the threshold of 200 km/h in 9.8 seconds. The Turbo is a little more modest at 3.2 seconds and 10.6 seconds.

Battery and autonomy

The lithium-ion battery is located on the floor of the vehicle and runs the entire length between the front and rear axles to ensure even weight distribution.

Advertised at 93.4 kWh (408 LG cells), the package’s capacity allows the Taycan to have from 381 to 463 kilometers of autonomy in the WLTP cycle. The smaller 79.2 kWh package allows up to 407 km on the Taycan 2S and 4S.

In short: Porsche Taycan

  • Price: from €86,254
  • Range: 381 to 463 km of range (WLTP)
  • Trunk volume: 530L

Tesla Model S poster

On the occasion of its conference called “Battery Day”, Tesla announced the launch of the most powerful of all Model S: the Plaid version. Equipped with three electric motors, it accelerates like a sports car and offers spectacular range. As your price… Almost 630 km of autonomy in reais for €130,000.

A high price in absolute terms, but one that remains very competitive when it comes to the performance level of this extraordinary car.

Exterior and interior design

Coming from the world of computing, the very innovative architecture of this car is similar to that of a smartphone scrolling with an integrated battery in the floor and a large, continuously updated touchscreen. This architecture also gives you excellent family benefits with three spacious rear seats and two huge trunks.

The latest generation of the Tesla Model S is distinguished above all by its Completely redesigned interior. The completely redesigned dashboard now consists of a large touchscreen in a horizontal position with a redesigned digital counter and a steering wheel without an aviation-style top spoke called the Yoke.

Engine and performance

Imagine: a Model S equipped with three electric motors that deliver 1,100 horsepower distributed across all four wheels. Enough to allow the machine to go from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 2.1 s, the 400 m standing start is swallowed in less than 9 s and the maximum speed is announced at 320 km/h. The Tesla Model S Plaid is therefore the brand’s flagship model.

In addition, fans note the presence of flared rear fenders in the Plaid version that they bring a fine touch of bestiality. Underneath this discreet jacket hides a major modification to the chassis, which includes two new axles in reinforced aluminum incorporating new engines.

Battery and autonomy

On the autonomy side, Tesla announces that it can exceed 840 km.

Accumulating 95 kWh of capacity, the lithium-ion battery is still composed of Panasonic Nickel Aluminum Cobalt cells, but their integration has been optimized and the voltage increased (350 to 450 V) to provide more power and receive more when charging.

In a nutshell: Tesla Model S Plaid

  • Price: from €130,000
  • Range: from 630 to 840 km
  • Trunk volume: 793 L

Lucid Air

In Europe, the select club of high-end electric sedans will soon have a new member. Almost a year after its launch in the United States, the Lucid brand wants to sell its luxury Air sedan in Germany as a first step.

  • With its 400 kilometers of autonomy and 400 horsepower, the entry model (Air) should be offered around $60,000 excluding taxes and government aid.
  • As for the high-end version, its production would be limited to 255 copies. Much sportier, it would offer 1,000 horsepower and be sold between 100/150,000 dollars (Air dream Edition), always exempt from taxes and government aid.
  • However, its shipping price would remain lower than its two competitors, the Porsche Taycan and Tesla Mode S Plaid.

[EDIT] According to our latest information, Lucid Air pricing starts at $169,000 (€158,000) for the Dream edition, made in a limited batch of 520 copies. Next comes the Grand Touring, for $139,000 (€130,000). Later, Lucid promises that lower-priced versions will be added to the lineup, coming in at a base price of $77,400 (€72,000) for the Pure version.

Exterior and interior design

The architecture of Lucid’s Space Concept not only includes the miniaturization of an electric and battery powertrain, but also extends the passenger cabin forward and aft! giving the Air a unique look. A fluid form uninterrupted by any detail that is not necessary, therefore, Lucid Air is the most aerodynamic luxury car in the world.

In front of the driver is a massive 34-inch curved glass 5K display that appears to float above the dashboard. During my time with the Porsche Taycan, I really liked its beautiful 16.8-inch curved display. The Air’s screen is twice as large as the Taycan’s and divided into three separate content sections.

The massive glass roof covers the entire cabin with almost no interruption. Front and rear occupants will enjoy the incredible view; the dividing line between inside and outside is blurring.

Engine and performance

With two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive, Lucid will allow customers to choose the configuration of their electric sedan.

At the “entry level” it is a 400 horsepower engine that will be offered. As for the top of the range, its performance should flirt with the best supercars. Powered by two electric motors – one per axle – the 1000 horsepower Lucid Air promises dazzling acceleration with a sprint from 0 to 96 km/h in 2.5 seconds.

Battery and autonomy

Powered by a 113 kWh battery, the top-of-the-range version will offer around 800 kilometers of autonomy. It will be complemented by other settings. At the entry level, the Lucid Air should offer 400 kilometers of range, which suggests a 70 to 90 kWh package. Once on the market, Lucid Air will be the fastest electric vehicle in terms of charging.

Note: Lucid Air is a vehicle that comes in 4 versions. The Air, the Touring, the Grand Touring and the Dream Edition, the latter being the most sophisticated.

  • This version offers a 1080 hp engine block, a range of 593 kilometers according to the WLTP cycle, acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.5 s and a maximum speed of 270 km/h.
  • It has a compatible ultra-fast charge of 350 kW (60% power in 20 minutes of charging, up to 32 kilometers in one minute).
  • Lucid Air production began in late 2020 in the United States. In terms of marketing, therefore, we shouldn’t expect to see the first copies on American roads before the start of 2021 and likely far beyond in Europe.

Summary: Lucid Air

  • Price: from €70,000
  • Range: more than 400 km of range (designed)
  • Trunk volume: 280 L at the front, plus 459 L at the rear
